I loved it !!!

This review is from: Monte Carlo (Amazon Instant Video) The movie was very sweet in which the girls get an adventure of a lifetime, and all three get their happy endings. Selena Gomez is an Awesome actress who plays sweet roles, I can honestly say I have never seen her do a movie or show where she didn't excel at it.

Charming

This was a charming, light, chick flick. Selena Gomez is utterly charming as a warm-hearted, earnest Texas girl who is visiting France for the first time with her lively friend and stiff step-sister, when she is mistaken for a wealthy heiress. The roles are well played, and the love interests are well cast. It is a bit formulaic, but it is a romantic comedy. The scenery is beautiful, the boys' Australian and French accents are real, and I particularly enjoyed the three romances involved.

A horrible film

I suppose that many people will excuse the extremely low level ofquality from Monte Carlo saying stuff such as "What did you expect? It's just a light comedy made for girls". I have two answers to thatpoint of view: 1) There are some movies "for girls", such as St.Trinian's and Mean Girls, which were funny, interesting and veryentertaining, because they had solid screenplays, competentperformances and good direction. And number 2) That kind of excuse isonly useful to insult the target audience of the film, because ittacitly suggests a level of ignorance in the girls which will avoidthem to recognize the low quality of a film made for them. So, insummary: crap is crap regardless of the target audience it was madefor. The screenplay from Monte Carlo is absolutely hollow and improbable, something which exacerbates the fact that it is totally unfunny andlacking of any ingenuity. Unfortunately, co-screenwriters ThomasBezucha (who was also the director), April Blair and Maria Maggentitook the easy route, building the story on the cheap structure of a TVsitcom, free of any creativity, surprises and narrative integrity. As for the performances, Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy tried to dotheir best, but their poorly written characters did not bring them toomuch to do. Selena Gómez feels listless and not credible at all, at thesame time she shows an absolute lack of charisma. In conclusion, Icannot recommend Monte Carlo because it is a horrible film which boredme to tears.

The adhesion of the main characters pays off for a great ending

The movie holds your attention because you're curious. A few zig-zagscomplicate a trip to Paris. Confusion turns to mischief. Can an awkwardTexas girl (Selena Gomez) fool the social elite and find love along theway? The relationship between three young ladies who long to see theCity of Love becomes the nucleus for a bizarre stay at hotel romp. Turnthe light switch off and on and suddenly an English sophisticate(Selena Gomez) gets put on hold while Texas Gomez fills her shoes. Thiswouldn't be so extraordinary except that everyone buys it... Small townTexan fools the french elite into thinking she is one Cordelia WinthropScott. Sooner or later you know she's gonna get found out but by thenit's just a matter of working around a few Monte Carlo authorities...Selena had no trouble playing polar opposites in this movie. Herprevious acting career opened the door.

More self-serving grandiosity than comedy, actors could not remember their roles in the story

Watching Selena Gomez in Ramona and Beezus, I could not resist but conclude that any other actor would have done much better that Gomez. Joey King was the real star there. Here, Monte Carlo is another piece of self-serving comedy that elevate Gomez far and beyond her real potential. The three females who went to Paris on summer vacation all seem to have not been preparing for performing their roles, their emotions detached form their actions, there were plenty of scenes where the three seem confused on what to do next. Gomez went through many abrupt changes in her dialogue and actions in a manner that is far from convincing. As if the moviemaker had thought out each turn of the scenario while shooting the individual scenes. When you expect plenty of laughter, surprise, and self reproach as three females ventured into a frightening and illegal act of impersonation and trespassing, the three characters appeared to be listening to instruction and executing mechanical acts that are hard to believe or enjoy. The end of the movie was also improper twist of events as Gomez has met the prince in a less probable and illogical setting of traveling from Texas to Romania volunteering for some school activity. The movie that would have been a great comedy was spoiled with the poor preparation of actors, shady scenario, and lacking talents. It must have been a movie by Gomez for Gomez that serves no better goal that self serving advertisement.

A Quasi-Romantic Comedy Film in Monte Carlo

Overall, I find Monte Carlo entertaining with all its funny antics. Butit didn't quite meet my expectations -- what with the half-bakedaffluence of the setting, its formulaic and hard-to-believe plot, andthe love teams that didn't have that tickling sensation one wassupposed to get when watching romantic films. The plot is superficial, but it is a romantic comedy anyway so it's supposed to be light inorder to serve its purpose of making the audience laugh and quiver.IfNicole Kidman and Julia Roberts, who were the original choicesaccording to IMDb.com, starred in the movie instead of the youngercast, I probably would've enjoyed the movie more.

A trio of delightful lead performances give it passable quality.

More often than not, I found myself wanting to like Monte Carlo morethan I actually did. It's not it's a terrible movie, but I found myselfunderwhelmed, mainly by the screenplay. It's full of charming moments, and some really interesting narratives and characters, but I found itto be a bit uneven, derivative bordering on tedious, and a bitoverlong. I certainly don't think it's a one note story, but it stilldoesn't break any new ground, and even under developed.Still, the soft spot in me can't help but give this movie a passinggrade, if only for the trio of lead performances. I will admit that Iam a fan of the works by Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, and KatieCassidy, so whoever came up with the idea to put all three of them in amovie together is a genius. The three of them share a terrific, irresistible chemistry that deserves a lot better than the moviethey're in, with the best performance of the bunch, I'll say, belongingto miss Meester.Like I said, I'll give it a passing grade, but if you're looking for atruly great rom-com, this sadly isn't it.**1/2 out of ****

Fun movie for my tween

This review is from: Monte Carlo (DVD) My daughter loves Selena Gomez and this movie was no exception. The story line was "fun" and what one would expect from this actress. My daughter recommends it for the tween group.

Wanted it to be good - it wasn't

This movie should have been good I was so looking forward to it. Theyhad an attractive cast and beautiful locations. How could they gowrong? It's pretty bad. The premise is familiar but still usually works- 3 American girls go to Europe and fall into mischief and romance. Theproblem is there is very little romance and very little humor. Thescreenplay is badly written without amusing situations or a build up ofromance. The dialog is not witty or charming. Hardly any laughs. Thedirecting is bad and choppy. Scenes just seem to jump from one toanother abruptly. Leighton Meester is a good actress on Gossip Girl buthere she seems to have just limited expressions. Katie Cassidy isslightly miscast a bit too together looking to be what she plays. Thecasting is strange. Selena Gomez looking like a British heiress? Notonly does she not look the part her accent and acting in her 2characters are not different enough. The male leads Cory Monteith whois a bit of a limited actor usually and Pierre Boulanger don't havemuch to work with. Only saving grace the locations and scenery arespectacular and it has a very on location feel. Overall: See if it youare a die hard fan of one or more of them but prepared to bedisappointed.

Silly, and pretty but not as much fun as other similar outings

Unlike some IMDb reviewers I can watch a movie and understand whatdemographic it is for and enjoy it for that demographic and review itfairly. Obviously Monte Carlo was not written for my demographic butthere has been plenty of "Disney" type pre-teen "Chick flicks" that Ihave thoroughly enjoyed for what they are. Monte Carlo doesn't reallyfit that bill very well. The movie has a decent, well liked, andpopular lead cast, lovely European locations, a funny comedic plot butnone of it really takes off. I would have liked to have seen moreslapstick laugh out moments and better chemistry with the cast wouldhave made this far better than what it was. I think I expected the filmto fit the demographic of pre-teen...12-14 year olds but instead, atbest, this is made for 10-12 year olds.Selena Gomez plays her dual roles in the film as down to earth likableGrace, and the uppity, snotty, entitled Cordelia. She actually does asolid job in both roles but she is one of the people I expected morelaughs from and that never really happens. Katie Cassidy plays Grace'sbest friend. I thought she sort of didn't fit in the cast very well. Ilike Cassidy in certain roles but this one just didn't fit her and shedidn't have great chemistry with Gomez. Leighton Meester is okay asGomez's step-sister. Meester is a great actress but I don't think hercharacter has much depth and she comes across as very unlikable for themost part. The supporting cast including Andie MacDowell and CoryMonteith are okay in their roles but far from noticeable or stand outin their performances. Even the romantic story lines are rather weakbecause the male romantic leads are completely forgettable.I would imagine that young girls will still get a kick out of the filmbut it could have been a whole lot more given the positive aspects ofthe film. I would say that the film's lack of impression was due toco-writer and director Thomas Bezucha lack of experience but he did anexcellent job on his previous film "The Family Stone" but I still thinkthis wasn't necessarily the right project for him because I think thescript lacked real depth and the execution of the film lacked punch. While there are some fun moments and some amusing laughs, overall thisone is definitely avoidable. There are just too many better films forthe same demographic. 6/10

Monte Carlo: A Journey of Self Discovery

Selena Gomez is an actress. Period. With her newest movie, Monte Carlo,Selena Gomez has successfully been released from the Disney Channellabel cast upon her by the immensely successful series, Wizards ofWaverly Place.I do not mean to imply that Gomez has, in any way, left her good- girlimage or abandoned her role-model status among teens, tweens, andassorted others across the globe – rather that she has progressed inher career to the point that she can now be seen as a serious actress.Gomez, along with talented cast mates Leighton Meester (who also showsher range as a thespian in her rare non Gossip Girl role) and KatieCassidy, star in a beautiful story of love, heartbreak, and maturity.Based on a previously done plot, Monte Carlo is about a young womanfrom Texas played by Selena Gomez, who is mistaken for an heiress, alsoSelena Gomez, and, along with her blue-collar best friend and bookishstepsister, is whisked into the idyllic world of luxury. Despite thisformulaic plot, the movie hits a surprising range of emotional gracenotes, including several moments of genuine regret, and concludes withan understated moral lesson about the value of self-respect over socialstatus. In Monte Carlo, these young women struggle to understand and appreciatethe world around them, and in doing so come to understand who theytruly are. The actresses do astounding jobs portraying their roles, thecinematography is excellent, and the scripting is brilliant. Through amovie with an overdone plot, themes of self-reflection andunderstanding percolate through the developing journeys of these threeyoung women – while light humor weaves throughout the plot. These jokes– both blunt and subtle – keep the audience thoroughly fixated on thestory and provide the film with the organic atmosphere it needs to makea true impact on viewers.Monte Carlo is more than just a standard tween film or Disney movie –it is a must-see summer movie that boasts great acting, stupendousideals, and enormous potential.

A very cute movie

When I received the Monte Carlo DVD, my little girl got so excited. It didn't take her long before she went straight to her room to watch the movie. Of course, I didn't get to watch the movie the first time around, so I watched it the 2nd time in the living room with my little girl. This movie is great for young girls and tween's. To be honest even at my age I found it be a really cute movie. The movie has tons of great music that makes you want to dance and sing along with it. My little girl couldn't help but get up and dance when the music started playing. This movie also teaches young girls self confidence with is really important for our girls that are growing up nowadays. Since, my little girl was already a fan of Selena Gomez, I knew she would love the movie, and she did. This movie will give you and young girls tons of laughs, and a great movie to watch together. Another thing this movie is really clean so letting my young daughter watch this was not a worry at all.

It works, for what it is, a vehicle for young Selena Gomez.

No one would mistake this film for a future classic. It is simple andsometimes silly, but for its target audience it works very well. Before I saw this movie I had very little exposure to Selena Gomez. Iknew vaguely who she was, and that is all. After watching the movie Icame away impressed. In actuality she has to play three roles. Thefirst is her character, Grace. The second is Grace pretending to besomeone else. And third, that other character. The last two may seem tobe the same, but they aren't. She has to play them all slightlydifferent to make it seem believable. And, I think she pulls it offvery well.Selena Gomez as Grace goes with her friend and her step sister toParis. But at one stop the tour bus that seems more intent on keeping aschedule than anything else leaves them. Then, Grace gets mistaken forher look-alike, a wealthy British girl Cordelia Winthrop Scott. Seeingthis as their way to get out of a pinch, she goes along with it andthey all end up in Monte Carlo. There the situations develop moreseriously.Mostly a fun movie, entertaining in a very light manner.
