This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) Just got this today. My Blue Ray player in my computer has been trustworthy until now. It will not play this. After two lengthy downloads to 'update' my device, it still does not play. Stay away from this disk, is all I can advise.Edit: It's not any better with a working codex. After much hassle, I did get a codex that works with this disk, but the content of the movie will not play. The commercials work just fine--they loop and play and play. The menu for the movie appeared once, and when I selected to play the movie, it looped back into the commercials. Now, it won't even give me that menu. Three reboots later, still the same. Not good, folks.Talk about a soup sandwich, the mangled mess that was put out as a finished product here is sure one.Edit2: Got it to run, though it dropped out and started through the advertisements after the first scene. It did pick up about where it left off though, once I went through the gyrations of restarting it. I upped the star count by one because I got a grin out of the movie and did sort of get it to play. I'd still suggest that this Blu ray version not be purchased.

I enjoyed this film although I had hoped it would be much better. The concept is original and I'm surprised it hasn't been done before (that I know of). All of the cast are very good and the special effects are excellent too. Overall it's a good film but it probably could have been a lot more fun with a slightly better plot.

The biggest problem with "C&A" is that the Aliens in this movie justaren't that interesting. Just like "Super 8", aliens is aliens isaliens. Nothing new about it. The aliens presence in this film shouldhave been more supernatural. There has to be something different tomake aliens scare us these days. The most obvious thing that will occurto you as the movie goes on, that the whole "alien invasion" gimmickdoesn't really work, and focus is concentrated on the old west aspectsof the story. This is also similar to "Super 8", which tried to be ahybrid of "Stand by Me" and "Close Encounters" or something. The wholescience fiction aspect weakens the character development instead ofsticking to one genre. But is the concept entertaining? I was being entertained by the decentpacing and casting. Craig saves the movie with his Bond-as-a-Cowboyapproach. He gets to show his fighting chops a few times against otherhumans, (again proving the aliens irrelevant). Ford is welcome beingcast as a mean dude. Thankfully, enough side stories with thesecharacters maintains a solid story arc. The alien aspects during thefirst two acts seem to be barely touched upon (mainly because anyserious discussion makes the whole premise sound silly). Again, if thealiens' presence was more creepy and less obvious, the dark forceinvading the town would keep the film a little better grounded.Unfortunately, by the middle of the second act, the story contrivances- the mysterious lady, the wrist weapon, the kidnapped townfolk, thegrumpy barkeep, the amnesia - all get longwinded. Essentially, thepremise of cowboys fighting aliens is only good enough for maybe a 90minute film, but this movie drags on to almost a full two hours. Thewhole alien battle at the end feels like the last reel got accidentallyswapped with "Transformers 4". Little is explained about them (exceptto satisfy the now ridiculous logic of the story). Why were theykidnapping the townfolk? Why didn't they just kill them? Why did thealiens so desperately need what they came to Earth for? I left beforethe credits rolled. It was finishing like a typical Hollywoodcookie-cutter movie, and it didn't take much to figure out the outcomesof the major characters. It was just too bad that the IQ level of themovie started strong and descended to the level of a 10-year-old by theend. I think the film would have been a big hit if they conceded thatthe concept did not warrant a full two hours, and instead created a funsummer popcorn movie with Craig commanding the screen and the paddingremoved.

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) Great flick, but Universal Studios has included a Ultraviolet/Flixster copy in the Digital Copy insert. Thankfully they did include a real iTunes redemption code is included. Warner Bros. I can understand going to the evil side of UV streaming copies, hell they own the company. But Universal et tu? This is a bad bad sign.

The movie starts out strong mostly because Daniel Craig is one of themost bad ass actors around and thats the reason i gave this movie thevery high score of five out of ten. The story I'm not going to lie ispretty stupid and your not sure whether its about cowboys or aliens orjust some messed up crossover. The main girl being an alien was alsoreally weird. I personally thought it was a stupid addition to analready mediocre movie. their were some good fighting scenes and allbut then you realized that their were aliens and all that. even DanielCraig became less and less bad ass as the movie went on. all in all iwouldn't say i necessarily wasted my money but i do wish i just waitedfor a month or two and netflixed it

Seriously speaking, if you are fond of taking naps in movie theaters...then this might just be the movie for you. with a cast line up ofHarrison Ford, Daniel Craig and newcomer Olivia Wilde I intentionallyhad high hopes for this movie I'm not saying i thought this movie wasgoing to be a life changing experience but i was hoping to just kill afew hours with some kick-ass action a decent plot and some decentacting but what i got was a kick up the ass from my girlfriend forfalling asleep on her shoulder a plot line with bigger holes than mygrandmothers underwear and some mediocre acting. In other words peopleI would wait for the DVD release! wait scratch that just don't see thismovie at all 2/100

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) Missed the movie and purchased the DVD which proved as good if not better than the going to the movie. The DVD is very well made and the movie itself is exceptionally well made and very realistic without too much of the "Hollywood BS" normally seen in Sci-fi themes. Computer immaging as well as acting is superb.

This movie is FUN! If your looking for an epic grounded story then youwon't find it here. You also won't find new CG and tech like in ride ofthe apes. But what you will find is a fun story with great action. Thatisn't to say that this film doesn't deliver great sound and CG, the barhas been raised a long time ago and watching CG made real life iscommon place. Crag delivers a great cowboy character who won't make you think Bondalong the way. Ford also delivers well and plays his part perfect asmany expect him to do. I truly enjoyed this movie from start to end.If you want to forget the world for a while and simply enjoy a goodstory that is delivered in a great manner then see this film. You willnot be disappointed so long as you take it for what it is.

Checked out the movie "Cowboys & Aliens," starring Daniel Craig,Harrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde. I actually wanted to see this movie inthe movie theater and didn't get a chance to. My first thoughts when Isaw the previews of this movie were "this looks cool." The concept ofcowboys and aliens going head to head, to me, was a very cool concept. When you looked at the preview, you wasn't a hundred percent sure whatto expect. I thought that was good too!Surprisingly, this movie isn't too far fetched. I felt like they did agood job of keeping the story feasible. This film is enjoyable. It wasalso different too. Even though it does have its common alien moments.Parts that you've seen before and you figure will happen, but all inall, a pretty good film.I loved Harrison Ford's character(Woodrow Dolarhyde). He was a classicrooting tooting cowboy leader you would predict to be in this type offilm. You could feel the natural cowboy nature in him. He did a greatjob of acting. There's a part were he's talking to the little boy inthe ship and he cracks a baby smile, classic.I'm giving this film an 8 out of 10. I would say this is DVD worthy. Iborrowed my friends DVD, but eventually I will own this movie. If youson't feel like its DVD worthy. Definitely check it out on Netflix's orRedbox it. Solid film.

I'm not a big fan of Daniel Craig films but this one I must admit Iactually enjoyed. From the trailer and from what i'd heard around theweb I was not expecting much at all from this. It's got guns, aliens, cowboys,Injuns(^^) and a sexy alien .Yes, it may end in a result you were expecting but so do rollercoasters . I'm not gonna give you a full lowdown on each character orthe plot, i'm just gonna say if you want a decent action film then youcould do worse than choosing this one.The effects are very good ,nottoo much like some films in these times of CGI. When I see this for adecent price on Blu-ray I'll be buying it . Don't believe the bad hype, judge it for yourselves.

Finally my prayers to the Hollywood top dogs for a bit of originalityhave been answered in the form of Cowboys & Aliens, a sci-fi thriller(which puts me in even more of an optimistic mood due to it being oneof my preferred genres of choice). Yes it is based on a graphic noveland yes technology in the wild west has been implemented before butthis isn't a sequel/prequel and as a concept is very fresh.Daniel Craig plays Jake, a cowboy who wakes up in the middle of nowherewith no recollection of who he is, where he has been or how he gotthere. In fact the only clue given to him is a strange metallicbracelet that he is unable to remove from his arm. After making his wayto the nearest town he soon makes himself known to the locals and isidentified as a dangerous and wanted man guilty of several crimesincluding stealing gold from local rancher Woodrow Dolarhyde (HarrisonFord). After being arrested and readied for transport, alien spaceshipsappear out of nowhere and start snatching people away and blowing upthe surrounding countryside. Jake's bracelet transforms itself into aweapon and he is able to drive the aliens away. Now forced to work together to save the people who were kidnapped fromthem, Jake and Woodrow team up with the other remaining survivors fromthe town and set off to find out how to put a stop to their commonenemy. The greatest emotion I felt while watching this was one ofindifference, mainly directed towards the plot and structure of themovie. Favreau couldn't be more obvious with his intentions for thefilm as hinted at by the title. Cowboys & Aliens merges the twoseparate worlds of the wild west with gun-slingers, bandits and Indianswith the technologically advanced alien species resulting in no morethan a series of confrontations between the two which climaxes in,well, a final confrontation between the two. Where is the interest forthe audience with this concept that can only be taken so far?The story never developed and just had the characters running aroundwith horses doing cowboy things leaving them to remain as twodimensional as the drawings they once were. This is despite the bestefforts of Ford and Craig to draw me in. The most impressive part beingthat as well known for other characters (Jones and Bond) as they are,the two are still able to make you forget this fact and make thecharacters their own, even when Ford dons a Indiana-esque cowboy hat. This is a perfect example of the money men of big studios backing theconcept rather than the actual story. I'm sure like most of youinitially this film sounds like a movie with promise but come the end Ididn't feel as though I had been taken on an adventure more rather ledfrom scene to scene as a means to an end. In addition, the CGI couldhave been better when considering the other films that have alreadybeen released this year and the budget that Cowboys & Aliens had toplay with but instead they also fail to impress.I can't emphasise how disappointed I was with this. Given the plethoraof talent in the writing department (Orci, Kurtzman, Lindelof etc.think Star Trek, Iron Man, Children of Men, Lost (TV)) for this movieit came up well short of what it should have. Turns out originality maynot have been what I was looking for after all! Rating: C-For further reviews feel free to check out:http://www.fanaticalaboutfilms.com

Let's get this straight right from the start: I cannot possibly write an unbiased review of this movie. I was raised in the 90's, the son of parents raised in the 50's and 60's. James Bond, STAR WARS, and Indiana Jones were instilled in me at an early age, as were the great sci-fi and western flicks of yesterday. COWBOYS & ALIENS is basically the summation of all of my childhood fantasies. Possibly, this applies to you as well. If so, you'll know exactly where I'm coming from. But if it doesn't...well, you may still be in for a treat. John Favreau pulls a few punches, but you don't really notice. The film revolves around Jake Lonergan, a wanted criminal who awakes in the desert with no knowledge of who he is (when asked what he knows, he stoically replies: "English"). In town, Lonergan has a run-in with Percy Dolarhyde (Paul Dano), a spoiled rich boy who loves to shoot his guns off. Percy's ex-Confederate daddy (Ford) comes riding into town, with a bone to pick with Lonergan. Unfortunately, a few aliens intervene, kidnapping some townsfolk, and the two foes must join forces to save the day.Make no mistake: cliches abound. Favreau and company (there are eight credited screenwriters, not to mention the comic's creator) hit every major Western point; co-producer Ron Howard, in the bonus features, actually comments on how a good western strikes all of the major chords, which I would disagree with, but his fat wallet speaks louder than my empty checking account, so go figure. (On a side note, it's interesting to hear John Favreau say that STAR WARS borrowed from western iconography; definitely gives some food for thought.) Usually, cliches are a hindrance; when you're watching a film such as COWBOYS & ALIENS, you kind of expect them, and as such are willing to say, "Okay, well, I saw this coming, so I can't complain much." That's not to say they're completely unnoticeable (note the lack of a star), but this is still a fun ride. This film has two stars: the special effects and the actors. The effects are great; nothing ground-breaking, but this film isn't meant to be. It's just fun. The aliens are freaky and interesting; the explosions are cool; the violence is surprisingly gory in spots (almost detrimentally so, but not quite). The film's greatest strength, however, lies in its actors; Favreau has dotted his film with a bunch of talented character actors. Daniel Craig has done this thing many times before, which simply means he's damn good at it: he's got the tough-guy wit down pat, and adds a bit of an emotional touch where required (Craig is, after all, one of the best actors on the scene right now, make no mistake). Harrison Ford, too, has carved his niche, though he gets to push past this in a couple scenes: for a little while, you're actually afraid of him, as his character isn't necessarily a nice guy. He's grossly underused, however; this is Craig's vehicle, not Ford's. The same goes for Olivia Wilde; her character is interesting (if predictable), and the actress is clearly up for a challenge, but she never gets to do much. The supporting cast features Sam Rockwell as a bartender/doctor bent on rescuing his wife; Clancy Brown as a tough-as-nails preacher; Keith Carradine as a kind-but-tough sheriff; and an especially-good Paul Dano as the younger Dolarhyde. There are too many subplots that never get fully expanded; a whole lot of cliches that you see coming a mile away, and make no sense even within the context of the film; and everything runs on a bit too long. But that's all okay. Why? Because COWBOYS & ALIENS is one of the few honest films to come out in recent years. Check out its title: that's exactly what you get. It's fun, plain and simple. It won't win awards, and it doesn't deserve any. It's meant to entertain, it's meant to excite the fanboy in you, and by God, it does that job admirably.

COWBOYS & ALIENS gives you exactly what you expect when you sit down towatch it; no more, no less. My hopes for this movie were higher thanthey probably should've been, but for all the right reasons: it wasdirected by Jon Favreau (who did great justice to the IRON MAN movies),and the cast looked phenomenal. After I watched the movie, I wasn'tdisappointed per se, but I wasn't thrilled. It was a passable popcornaction movie that works fine for a slow afternoon. It opens with anameless stranger awakening in the middle of Arizona with a strangedevice around his wrist and no memory of who he is or how he arrivedthere. The stranger wanders to the nearest town, Absolution, and getsinvolved with the locals when he stands tall against the spoiled son ofa local cattle baron. He's recognized as a criminal who was involved ina recent gold robbery and, when things couldn't get any worse, alienforces arrive and abduct a handful of townspeople in a violent raid. Now this stranger, identified as outlaw Jake Lonergan, joins cattlebaron Woodrow Dolarhyde and the town's bravest in tracking the aliensthat made off with their loved ones. Aided by a mysterious woman whomay not be what she seems, Lonergan and his posse ride out to confrontan alien race that has come to strip mine our planet. Wild West meetsOuter Space in a genre blend that might take itself a little tooseriously.Western films and science fiction come across as two polar opposites inthe context of movie genres. I have a hard time wrapping my head arounda truly good mixing of the two. I suppose you can say it's been done toan extent in movies like the original STAR WARS but that was lesssci-fi/western and more fantasy/adventure. This is really as close as Ican see anyone getting when blending the gritty drama of a western withthe flashy, explosive action associated with an alien invasion. I don'tthink it's that Jon Favreau did a horrible job with the subject matter.I just think the premise was flawed to begin with. It's like trying tomix oil and water. It just wasn't meant to be. I could be wrong (infact, I probably am) and there might be examples out there ofwestern/sci-fi success stories. I checked out information on theoriginal graphic novel to see if it was just a weak adaptation andno no it wasn't. I haven't read the original novel but the plot summaryI read looks like an explosive cheese-fest (two words: anti-gravityhorseshoes). In fact, I give kudos to Favreau and his writing team formaking COWBOYS & ALIENS as passable as it was. It's got all theingredients of a good blend: the mysterious gunslinger, conflict withNative Americans, a plot based around the most valuable resource of theperiod, and, of course, aliens. I guess they did what they could, right? The cast in the movie is loaded with all-stars. Hollywood's most recentgo-to hero Daniel Craig does an awesome job as Lonergan (dude, it's got"loner" right there in his name ). Film icon Harrison Ford does betterthan he has in some of his other recent roles. And the supporting castis rounded out with some wicked choices including the talented risinghottie Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell (one of my favorite actors and a bitunderused here), and Keith Carradine. With an ensemble cast like this, everyone gets just enough story to keep the movie going with a littleextra focus on Lonergan and Dolarhyde. There's a lot of little stuffgoing on here but the main focus is confronting the invading aliens. For whatever reason, this movie moved pretty slow for me. It's got itsfun moments but the bits between the action scenes (the parts where themovie was supposed to be more "western") weren't interesting enough andI'd get bored at times waiting for the next battle. A lot of peoplehave complained about the plot, more specifically the reason for thealiens' invasion. Personally, I thought it was a nice touch. A littlefar-fetched, but a nice touch. I hope the studios hadn't gone into thismovie expecting the birth of a new franchise, because COWBOYS & ALIENSwas far from the blockbuster they must've expected with Favreau at thehelm. In my opinion, it was just an "all-right" movie that promised tobe more than the premise really allowed. But hey at least it wasn't JONAH HEX.

I'm very surprised at the positive reviews on here. I honestly thought the movie was pretty much everything wrong with the movie industry today. The name alone sounds like some hashed up SCI-FI B movie that should have went straight to VHS at best. To be fair though, I did watch the movie with hopes that it'll go against my ever nagging skepticism. To me I thought they should rename the movie Cowboys & [maybe SOME] Aliens because for almost half the movie, there were barely any encounters or rather I say quality scenes with the aliens and mind you, the aliens were your stereotypical bunch; sharp teeth, out to harm humans, ugly. Basically uncreative and definitely death to originality in every sense of the word. So half the movie felt like your typical cowboy movie and in the end, they have a small group of people that band together to fight the aliens in, mind you, a battle of very minute, nonepic, lackluster proportions. The movie wasn't suspenseful, it wasn't creative, it wasn't humorous, it wasn't witty, it just wasn't. Predictable from beginning to end.So, what's so decent about this movie? Do I sense some mindless Harrison Ford worshipers or paid reviewers? I wouldn't watch this movie twice, so 23 bucks is definitely out of the question. To each their own, but you're giving the movie industry a bad message, basically "go ahead and make bad movies, chances are we're just [FILL IN THE BLANK WITH NEGATIVE WORDS] to tell and will probably pay to watch it anyway". Amazon star ratings definitely should be held very loosely in terms of credibility. I hope everyone that gave this above 3 stars and above never become important people in real life, the future looks bleak.

I was skeptical when I heard about this film, I mean, cowboys fighting space monsters? It seemed like too much of a stretch, especially since only a few Europeans were even dreaming that such things were possible. However, given the actors, I thought, what the heck, I'll give it a look-see while on a long airplane trip. And from the first moment, when the hero wakes with amnesia and a strange metal bracelet, the characters drew me into a much better-than-average story. It was even hard scifi without a whiff of fantasy, though what the aliens could do definitely would have seemed like magic or demons to the men of that time. The plot even has some good twists. D Craig makes a wonderful tough guy who deep down is grieving even if he can't remember why. He demonstrates his propensity to deadly violence right away, but there is something principled about it or seemingly so. After a quick imbroglio, he wanders into a town that is riven by a spoiled gunslinger, whose father is apparently a brutally evil rancher. Craig is also approached by a mysterious and beautiful woman, who seems to know a lot about him. When they seem ready to kill eachother, the town is attacked, setting them on an adventure together as Craig discovers the metal object is a weapon. Add Indians and a band of outlaws (who know Craig as a leader) into the mix and you begin to wonder if any of it is going to make sense. That the rest of the movie succeeds so well, maintaining a sense of mystery and awe at least in me, is a testament to an unusually intelligent script. One of the best themes in the film is how the humans band together, each bringing skills from their cultures and experience, to fight the baddies. It might sound silly, but it really works well. For example, the Indians give a potion to Craig that liberates his memory. I don't want to play the spoiler, so won't say anything more, but it is a raucous ride with great CGI.Warmly recommended. It won't be what you expect, if you like hard scifi to begin with, that is.

Nope, didn't do it for me.I read a number of reviews about character development, great directorhomages, etc. and just didn't see them. Yes, the town and the costumeswere great, but a number of good actors are here (it has a great cast)and they just didn't get enough good material to work with. Also, toomany character clichés - the pragmatic preacher, the sheriff buckingthe overlord, the overlord's boneheaded son, the 'stranger' who is areformed bad guy AFTER a bump on the head, the climax inside the alienspaceship - to make this more than two hours of mildly escapistentertainment. One reviewer wrote that this would have made a greatSTRAIGHT western, and I agree.Despite the attractive scenery and outdoor photography, viewers areprobably better off with the original material or other classics suchas UNFORGIVEN, THE SEARCHERS or HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER. '3' out of '10.'

Having read mixed reviews for this film, I wasn't sure what to expect. Some were very positive but others were less than enthusiastic. Idecided to forget what I'd read, good and bad, and simply see it withan open mind and no expectations either way.I found C&A extremely enjoyable. I'm a fan of westerns, but not reallyinto sci-fi. The aliens in this film were very well done, however, anddecently believable. The film stays true to its western setting, thecharacters are realistic (though I do wish their backgrounds werefleshed out a little more), and, more than anything, the acting isfantastic. The plot is straightforward. The biggest complaint seems to be thesimplicity of the script. It's uncomplicated, yes, but I liked it thatway. Will it have the most intricate, twisting plot you've ever seen? No. And with a title like Cowboys and Aliens, it doesn't pretend to.But will it make you laugh and cheer? Yes. In fact people did bothseveral times at the theater I was in. All in all, it's a veryentertaining action film with some touching, heartfelt moments. I'llprobably see it again and I'll definitely be getting the DVD.

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Version) (Amazon Instant Video) First of all, the title should tell you what you need to know. If you can get past that, you will notice two of the best actors around (my opinion). Overall, I enjoyed the movie and would watch it again if it were on TV or in the free category. Worth renting if you are into action, old west action, decent story lines, or aliens.
